Punjab Police intensify enforcement of Anti‑Kite Flying Act
Punjab police have stepped up their crackdown on breaches of the Anti‑Kite Flying Act, a spokesperson said. Officials reported that so far this year 11,397 individuals have been detained and 10,849 cases filed for contravening the law throughout the province. In total, authorities have seized 599,340 kites from those arrested.
In Lahore, the provincial capital, 5,740 suspects have been taken into custody and 5,466 cases registered. Police recovered more than 217,000 kites and 7,875 traditional string‑spinning wheels, known locally as charkhis, from the city.
The Inspector General of Police for Punjab has issued a clear directive that illegal kite flying will not be tolerated anywhere in the province. He also ordered the arrest of anyone involved in the illicit metal‑string trade and the online kite market.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given the green light for a ten‑day Basant celebration to be held across Punjab from 29 January to 7 February 2027. The festival marks the arrival of the new year and follows its revival last year after a 25‑year break.
Ahead of Basant 2027, Lahore authorities have urged residents to complete safety preparations to protect lives during the festivities. The city’s district administration has also imposed a total ban on shipping kite‑flying equipment through courier services and transport companies.
