Late‑season performers vie for Wales places

Wales head coach Steve Tandy announced his Nations Championship squad on Tuesday, 20 October, and the Welsh clubs’ recent European fixtures gave him a few extra options to consider. The Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets all began the Challenge Cup with victories, while Cardiff fought hard but fell short at Northampton in their return to the top‑tier Champions Cup.

Wales will host Japan, New Zealand and Australia in Cardiff before travelling to Twickenham for a further southern‑hemisphere clash on finals weekend. BBC Sport Wales now looks at the players who used these final club games to make a case for inclusion before the 2027 World Cup.

**Welsh side counting down to the World Cup**

Cardiff’s goalless showing in the Champions Cup still produced positives, chiefly the returns of seasoned internationals Taulupe Faletau and Josh Adams after injury layoffs. Faletau, the number eight, played just under an hour, gaining 65 metres from eight carries in the first half and producing a key defensive play that stopped Callum Chick on the try line. He finished by powering out of a scrum base, underscoring his rapid recovery from a knee injury that had sidelined him after being picked for the 2025 autumn internationals. Tandy, who worked with Faletau on the 2021 Lions tour to South Africa, now has a wealth of back‑row talent and hopes the veteran stays fit.

Adams entered the match for the final quarter, making his first start of the season. The 31‑year‑old, who enjoyed a strong 2026 Six Nations, was thwarted by a covering tackle from George Hendy when a try seemed imminent, but his experience adds depth to the back three. Cardiff’s upcoming United Rugby Championship fixtures against the Sharks at the Arms Park and the Ospreys at St Helen’s will give both Faletau and Adams further minutes before the national team makes its final selections.

**Morgan‑Williams makes his mark**

Scrum‑half Tomos Williams is the clear starter for the Japan test on Saturday, 7 November, yet the number 21 shirt remains up for grabs throughout the month. Rumours of coaxing Scarlets veteran Gareth Davies out of retirement have gained traction after Kieran Hardy’s injury against the Dragons.

In the meantime, Ospreys’ Reuben Morgan‑Williams has emerged from relative obscurity. The 28‑year‑old, who came off the bench in Wales’ most recent test in South Africa, earned his first start of the season against Black Lion in Tbilisi and helped his side to a comfortable win. He kept the tempo high, threading a pass through three defenders to set up hooker Lewis Lloyd’s try. Morgan‑Williams recorded two clean breaks, 11 carries and 77 metres before being substituted with thirty minutes left. The Ospreys are keen to establish him as deputy to Saracens scrum‑half Williams, and Tandy may also give Dragons prospect Che Hope a taste of the test environment.

**Consistency shines for Dragons**

The Dragons displayed defensive grit before securing a hard‑fought victory over Perpignan in Newport on Friday. Coach Filo Tiatia’s side have started the season strongly, though that does not guarantee a larger representation in Tandy’s squad. Lock Ben Carter is a virtual certainty, tight‑head prop Dillon Lewis hopes to build on his summer form, and in‑form hook
