NAB launches probe into power sector irregularities
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has opened several federal cases after detecting alleged irregularities in Pakistan’s power sector, NAB chairman Lieutenant General (retd) Nazir Ahmed announced. Speaking to reporters alongside the director general of operations and other officials, Ahmed said the bureau will pursue action against power plants that have defrauded the state. He also indicated that investigations will extend to the mines and minerals sector and the Auqaf department.
Ahmed revealed that NAB is intensifying a crackdown on illegal occupants of state‑owned land, noting that the bureau now maintains verified land records at its offices. “We are no longer affected by fires breaking out in buildings,” he said, referring to the improved record‑keeping system.
Recovering assets remains a top priority for NAB. Ahmed claimed the agency has reclaimed state assets worth Rs 14.6 trillion this year, including railway land valued at Rs 6.78 trillion. He added that 866,299 acres of land belonging to provincial government departments have also been recovered, with an estimated value of Rs 2.395 trillion.
In a further development, the bureau has introduced an artificial‑intelligence‑based investigation platform called “NAB AI” to assist its investigative work.
