Morris secures third gold for GB at cycling worlds

Britain’s Anna Morris added a third gold medal to her haul at the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai on Saturday, winning the women’s madison alongside 19‑year‑old Scottish rider Erin Boothman. The pair accumulated 40 points to finish ahead of France, who took second, and Japan, who placed third.

“I am quite speechless. It is going to take a while to sink in and reflect on it,” Morris, a seven‑time world champion, said after the race. “It has been a busy few days so now I have got time to let that soak in and enjoy it.”

Morris, 31, became the first woman to capture all three events – team pursuit, omnium and madison – at a single championships since the women’s madison was added in 2017. She claimed the omnium title on Friday and helped secure the team pursuit gold on Thursday, racing with Boothman, Josie Knight and Millie Couzens.

In the same session, England’s Millie Couzens, 22, earned Britain’s other gold of the day by winning the women’s individual pursuit. Couzens led from the start and recorded a time of four minutes 21.505 seconds, edging out 29‑year‑old Josie Knight by half a second in an all‑British final. “It is amazing, I am still a bit in shock to be honest. I had zero expectations going in,” Couzens said.

With these victories, Great Britain topped the medals table, holding six gold medals overall.
