Ronaldo receives 30‑day ban and £215 fine from Portuguese FA
Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30‑day suspension and a fine of 255 euros (about £215) by the Portuguese Football Federation after he walked out of the national team camp in September. The 41‑year‑old captain left the Nations League squad after sitting on the bench against Norway and learning he would not start the match against Denmark on 1 October. In a detailed statement, Ronaldo accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice, calling it an “absolute breach of trust”.
The ban takes effect from the day of the Denmark game, meaning Ronaldo has already served 19 days and will not miss any upcoming fixtures. Portugal will meet Denmark again on 14 November in the Nations League, followed by a match against Wales three days later.
The FPF disciplinary committee said it considered the remorse shown in Ronaldo’s statement, his contributions to football and his recognized athletic merit. As part of his defence, the forward submitted his CV outlining his awards and achievements. He also referred the committee to an earlier statement in which he accepted responsibility, apologized to teammates and fans, and acknowledged that he deserved punishment.
Coach Jorge Jesus denied any prior agreement with Ronaldo but said he remains open to the player’s return. Pedro Proença, president of the FPF, told the Portuguese newspaper Record that there is a strong desire to have Ronaldo back in the national team once the issue is settled.
Ronaldo’s record for Portugal stands at 146 goals in 234 appearances, both men’s world records, and includes victories in Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles. He moved to Saudi club Al‑Nassr in December 2022 on a reported annual salary of £177 million and signed a contract extension last year.
