Coleraine’s dramatic comeback fuels talk of a statement win

Before the match, Coleraine boss Ruaidhri Higgins warned that it was premature to talk about “statement” victories. After his side rallied from two goals down to beat title rivals Larne 3‑2 at Inver Park, the manager joined the celebrations in front of the travelling fans.

Joel Cooper secured the winner in what many are calling a game‑of‑the‑season contender, as the Bannsiders erased a two‑goal deficit and handed the reigning champions their first league loss of the campaign. The three points moved Coleraine six points clear of Linfield, who have two games in hand, and 11 points ahead of Larne, who sit on four extra matches after their summer European run.

Higgins stopped short of labeling the result a statement win, but his pride was evident. “The manner [of the victory] is the most pleasing thing,” he told BBC Sport NI’s Jana McCabe. “It makes me feel really proud of the group. When the second goal went in and we’re away to the champions, did we let our heads drop? We didn’t. We actually grew from strength to strength and clawed our way back into the game. I felt we smelled blood when the first goal went in and we went after it. We were outstanding in that second period.”

Larne have claimed three titles in the past four years and have been challenging the traditional powerhouses of the Irish League. Coleraine, buoyed by new ownership and a shift to full‑time status, are eager to lift their first Gibson Cup since 1974.

The two sides had previously drawn 0‑0 earlier in the season, a match that failed to live up to expectations. Friday night, however, delivered Irish League drama at its finest. James Simpson’s first‑half double gave the hosts a 2‑0 lead, but Coleraine’s attacking firepower soon responded.

With about 30 minutes left, Cooper struck after Larne failed to clear Ben Doherty’s cross. Nine minutes later, Matthew Shevlin headed home from another Doherty delivery. The drama continued when substitute Kevin O’Hara rattled the crossbar, and Cooper completed his hat‑trick with the decisive goal with nine minutes of regular time remaining.

When asked about the win, Cooper called it “a real big statement.” “We have a never‑say‑die attitude in the changing room, and we believe we have quality and a team that scores goals,” he said. “Not many teams come here and get three points, so it’s always nice. We’ll go home, enjoy the night, recover and go again next week.”

Coleraine now turn their attention to a clash with an improved Crusaders at Seaview on 24 October. “Coming from behind at the home of the champions and winning is an even better feeling,” Higgins added. “It will give the players real belief going forward and hopefully we can continue this really, really good run of form that we’re on.”

Larne manager Gary Haveron was left to rue the collapse, describing his side’s defending as “pathetic.” Before the match, Larne had conceded only three goals in seven league games, but Coleraine’s surge in a 21‑minute spell doubled that tally. Despite the disappointment, Haveron dismissed the idea that the defeat was a statement for his opponents. “We’ve still got to play them down there,” he said. “We drew the first one, they’ve won this one. There’s still a lot of games for us to play against them, and there’s lots of football between now and the end of the season.”

Larne, missing influential midfielder Chris Gallagher, will look to bounce back quickly when they host fellow challengers Linfield at Inver Park on Tuesday. The defeat follows a recent penalty shoot‑out loss to Championship side Dundela in the County Antrim Shield, a week Haveron described as “disappointing.” “It’s a great opportunity for us to bounce back from what is a disappointing week,” he said, adding that the loss to Dundela was “not something I’m bothered about.” The focus now shifts to the upcoming league fixture against Linfield.
