Charity looks back on evolving needs after 25 years
Help a Guernsey Child marked its 25th anniversary by noting how the pressures on local families have shifted since the charity was set up in 2001. Over that period it has supplied more than £1.2 million worth of essential items, equipment, services and support to children and young people across the Bailiwick.
In its early years the charity directed funds toward larger community projects that benefited children. Recently it has moved toward helping individual children and families directly. Alex Jenner of Help a Guernsey Child said, “Over the past 25 years, we have seen significant changes in the types of support families require.” He added that, despite those changes, the charity’s purpose has remained the same: “to ensure that children in the Bailiwick are not disadvantaged because they lack the essentials that every child deserves.”
The organisation works through professional referrers who know the children and families involved. Applications for grants come from social workers, health visitors, teachers, doctors, nurses and other frontline professionals. Each request is examined individually by the charity’s directors. Jenner explained that the growing focus on individual cases means providing things as fundamental as a bed, flooring, white goods, clothing, safety equipment or a heating appliance, as well as specialist disability equipment and educational opportunities.
He noted that the nature of the charity’s work reflects the “changing pressures” faced by local families, including the rising cost of living and increased demand for essential household items and practical support. Jenner also said, “A relatively small grant at exactly the right time can make a profound difference to a child’s safety, wellbeing, education or independence.”
