Sindh chief minister seeks Chinese investment in clean energy and water projects
Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah, on a visit to China, met with senior officials of Shanghai Electric’s business group to discuss potential investment in the province’s energy, water and environmental technology sectors. Shah highlighted the province’s opportunities in solar and wind power, stating, “We will welcome the Chinese expertise and investment in clean energy projects.” He also expressed particular interest in Shanghai Electric’s desalination technology after a briefing on the company’s modern water‑treatment projects.
The Shanghai Electric team informed the chief minister about a desalination plant operating in Hebei province that treats 75,000 tonnes of water each day, alongside a multi‑effect distillation (MED) facility that produces an additional 25,000 tonnes daily. Shah said similar desalination solutions could be valuable for Karachi and other coastal areas of Sindh that face chronic water shortages. He invited the Chinese group to bring these advanced desalination systems to the province, adding, “Clean energy, desalination, and modern technologies could assist in sustainable development.”
