Ronaldo banned for 30 days, fined €255 by Portugal over spat with Jesus

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30‑day suspension by the Portuguese Football Association after he walked out of the national team camp following a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus about his role in the squad. The disciplinary council confirmed the sanction on Monday and imposed a fine of €255, roughly $285.

The incident occurred when Ronaldo left Portugal’s base in Copenhagen ahead of the Nations League clash with Denmark earlier this month. He had accused Jesus of reneging on promises regarding his involvement after being an unused substitute in the match against Norway. Jesus denied ever reaching such an agreement, but said he was open to Ronaldo’s return after Portugal’s 2‑1 victory.

The federation’s non‑professional disciplinary panel ruled that Ronaldo deliberately breached Article 160(1) of its regulations. The case was opened on 9 October after the events were reported two days earlier. The statement did not clarify which specific fixtures or activities the ban will affect, nor whether the days already served under a provisional suspension will count toward the 30‑day period.

Ronaldo later issued an apology for not acknowledging supporters after the Norway game and for abandoning his teammates, insisting he remains available for selection once any penalty is served. Portuguese FA president Pedro Proença said that everyone in the federation hopes Ronaldo will rejoin the national side once the issue is resolved.
