Japan initiates historic mission to retrieve samples from Mars’ moon Phobos

Japan has begun a five‑year, unmanned mission aimed at collecting material from Phobos, one of the two moons orbiting Mars, and delivering it back to Earth by 2031. If the effort succeeds, it will mark the first time scientists obtain samples from a Martian satellite for analysis. The launch was reported on 20 October 2026.
