Farrell faces key decisions ahead of Ireland squad announcement

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell is set to unveil his squad this week, a move that will likely spark debate about the team’s direction with less than a year remaining before the 2027 Rugby World Cup. On Wednesday, Farrell will announce the players selected for the home leg of next month’s Nations Championship, which features fixtures against Argentina, Fiji and reigning world champions South Africa before the finals weekend at Twickenham.

Ireland began the tournament with victories over Australia and Japan, then suffered a 40‑21 defeat to New Zealand in Auckland. After the November series, the Six Nations will be the only extended competitive block for Farrell’s side before they travel to Australia for the World Cup.

Injury concerns and a number of players eager to earn a place will dominate Farrell’s considerations. The weekend was encouraging for the coach, as Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster all kicked off their European campaigns with wins.

**When is the squad announced?**
The Ireland roster will be released at 15:00 BST on Wednesday.

**Ireland’s November fixtures (GMT):**
- Argentina, 6 November, Aviva Stadium, 20:10
- Fiji, 14 November, Aviva Stadium, 20:10
- South Africa, 21 November, Aviva Stadium, 16:40
- Nations Championship finals weekend (opponent to be confirmed), 27‑29 November, Allianz Stadium, Twickenham

**Injuries and returns**
Several key players will miss the November games. Captain Caelan Doris remains out after knee and foot problems that kept him away from the July tests against Australia, Japan and New Zealand. Jack Conan also looks doubtful after sustaining an arm injury in Munster’s Champions Cup win over Clermont. Their absences could open the door for Sean Jansen, who scored on his test debut against Japan and featured off the bench in the loss to the All Blacks.

Fly‑half Jack Crowley is still sidelined with a vascular injury. First‑choice scrum‑half Jamison Gibson‑Park is expected to be included, although he has not yet played for Leinster this season because of a groin strain. Props Jack Boyle and Paddy McCarthy remain unavailable, but Andrew Porter can be recalled as the starting loose‑head for the first time since the Springbok defeat in Dublin last year. Porter missed the 2026 Six Nations with a calf issue and was ruled out of the July tests for the same reason. His Leinster teammate Ryan Baird is also back in contention after a fractured tibia ended his 2025 autumn‑Test campaign.

Winger Mack Hansen returns after an injury‑hit 2025‑26 season that saw only two test appearances and a single run‑out for Connacht.

**Fly‑half battle**
With Crowley out, Sam Prendergast and Ciaran Frawley will vie for the No 10 jersey in November. Prendergast, aged 23, has 17 caps but has struggled to find consistency at test level, leading to his omission earlier in the Six Nations. He has, however, shone for Leinster, earning back‑to‑back man‑of‑the‑match awards in URC and Champions Cup victories over Cardiff and Clermont, showcasing a more incisive running game.

Frawley, 28, moved from Leinster to Connacht for regular game time and has flourished, scoring four tries and starring in the 45‑36 Champions Cup win over Saracens. He earned his first test start at fly‑half in Ireland’s July win over Japan and could see one or two more starts next month.

Munster’s young winger Charlie O’Shea has impressed, but Farrell may feel he is not yet ready for test rugby. Joey Carbery could earn a recall despite limited minutes since rejoining Leinster, and other backs such as Garry Ringrose, Robbie Henshaw, Stuart McCloskey and Bundee Aki are likely to remain in the centre mix. Jamie Osborne may also be considered after recent appearances at 12 for Leinster.

**Back‑row and forward options**
Sean Jansen is expected to play a key role, while uncapped Munster number eight Brian Gleeson could be added after a strong showing in the recent win over Racing 92. Gleeson missed a potential test debut a year ago due to an elbow injury.

Former England prop Kieran Brookes is also in contention for a front‑row spot, completing a list of players that Farrell will weigh as he finalises the squad for the upcoming November tests.
