Svitolina says Ukraine war’s emotional strain led to split from Monfils

Ukrainian tennis champion Elina Svitolina has announced that her marriage to former French player Gaël Monfils has ended, attributing the decision to the psychological toll of the conflict in her homeland. The 32‑year‑old, who sits at world No. 6, posted a candid message on Instagram describing how the war has affected her inner life. “This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to share,” she wrote, adding that she needs “to find my way back to myself.” She said she could not achieve that within her marriage.

Svitolina praised Monfils, 40, for his understanding, noting that he “listened” and “respected what I need with a strength and grace I will never forget.” She reflected that some battles are fought inside a person and no amount of love can win them for you. “It was the hardest thing I have ever had to tell the person I love,” she said. Growing up in Odesa, a Black Sea port that has endured heavy Russian bombing since the full‑scale invasion began in February 2022, Svitolina explained that the war brought sleepless nights, doubts and a sense of losing herself.

The pair married in 2021 and share a four‑year‑old daughter, Skai. Svitolina emphasized that her daughter will always be the priority, stating, “Our marriage is ending, but our family is not.”

Monfils, a former world No. 6 who was expected to play his final tournament at next month’s Paris Masters as an emotional farewell, effectively confirmed his retirement last week when he appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Authority’s list of retired players. Once a player leaves anti‑doping protocols, they are no longer eligible for professional events. The 13‑time ATP Tour title winner is now preparing for a new career in finance after joining a Swiss wealth‑management firm.
