Fazal ur Rehman says he would ask for prime minister’s post, not a governorship

Maulana Fazal ur Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema‑e‑Islam (JUI‑F), dismissed recent speculation that he is seeking a governorship. Speaking on October 20, he said that if he were to make any demand it would be for the prime minister’s office, not a provincial governorship, and called the reports “completely false” and an insult to his reputation.

Rehman also rejected the outcome of the 2024 general elections, calling for immediate, transparent fresh polls. He emphasized that his party has no connections with the banned Tehreek‑e‑Taliban Pakistan or any other organization. While acknowledging the sacrifices JUI‑F has made in the fight against terrorism, he warned that its leaders, office‑bearers, religious scholars and seminaries are now facing serious security threats, adding that his own life and the seminaries linked to him are no longer safe.

On constitutional matters, Rehman said his party had withdrawn proposed changes under the 26th Constitutional Amendment because he believed they would weaken the system. He alleged that the same provisions were later passed under the 27th Amendment after lawmakers were bought to support them.

The JUI‑F chief also criticised the state of the economy, describing it as weak and saying government measures have had little impact on ordinary citizens. Regarding ongoing negotiations and military operations, he questioned the rationale for talks after recent killings and asked where the PTI‑led government had obstructed the operation.

Rehman’s comments came as he reiterated his rejection of the 2024 election results, renewed his call for new elections, and highlighted concerns about security, constitutional reforms and economic conditions.
