Bilawal Bhutto says Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emergency could end if opposition backs federal anti‑terrorism drive, claims Sohail Afridi pledged not to fight militants

Karachi – Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari told reporters that the emergency imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could be lifted once the opposition aligns with the federal government in the fight against terrorism, according to ARY News. Speaking at a ceremony that marked the 19th anniversary of the Karsaz tragedy on October 18, Bhutto said the province’s chief minister, Sohail Afridi, had taken an oath stating he would not confront terrorists.

Bhutto added that if Afridi is unwilling to engage in the anti‑terrorism effort, the PPP is prepared to step in and lead the fight. He recalled that the party has historically confronted terrorism with resolve, noting the countless sacrifices made by citizens from all walks of life. The chairman also praised the armed forces for their dedication in defending the nation.

“The campaign against terrorism will continue until every corner of the country is free of militants,” Bhutto declared, stressing that national unity is essential for success. He warned that Pakistan is currently facing a historic economic crisis and expressed concern that conditions could deteriorate further. He called for strengthening democratic institutions and reminded listeners that he had earlier proposed the formation of a parliamentary committee to oversee electoral reforms.

Regarding the ongoing Governor’s Rule, Bhutto said the opposition’s desire to end it hinges on cooperation with the federal government in combating terrorism. He urged opposition parties to engage in dialogue if they wish to see the emergency lifted and invited them to join the proposed parliamentary committee on electoral reforms.

When asked about proposals to create new provinces or administrative units, Bhutto noted that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is aware of the PPP’s and President Asif Ali Zardari’s stance on the issue. He affirmed that any new provinces must be established through constitutional and legal procedures and questioned why such changes have not been pursued in regions where there is already consensus.
