Albertans vote down plan for independence referendum
Around three quarters of Albertans—approximately 76 percent—have voted against a proposal to hold a referendum on separating from Canada, according to unofficial tallies. The result is seen as a win for Prime Minister Mark Carney, though more than 300,000 voters supported the idea. Separatist groups maintain that their concerns have not been addressed, despite the defeat of the referendum motion. The vote was reported on October 20, 2026.
