Ranking the Premier League’s all-time greatest super subs

Mikel Arteta may be trying to rename them “finishers”, but the football world still knows them as super subs – players who change a game the moment they step off the bench. This list celebrates those who have repeatedly delivered goals or assists when their managers needed a spark. A few notable names missed out, such as Adam le Fondre, whose five of eight season‑total goals came from three substitute appearances in January 2013, giving him the record for most bench goals in a single Premier League campaign. Hernán Crespo boasts the highest goals‑per‑minute ratio, but his six goals in 16 substitute outings for Chelsea are a small sample, as is Mark Robins’s five in 14 for Norwich and Leicester.

To make the top ten, a player must have shown consistency over many seasons, contributing both goals and assists. Below is the ranking, open to debate in the comments.

10. Theo Walcott
Walcott has been subbed on 168 times, the most in Premier League history. More important is what he did after coming on. The fast‑moving forward broke into the league as a teenager and was often used by Arsène Wenger to stretch defenses with his speed. As a substitute he recorded 14 assists – the highest total, tied with Ryan Giggs and Marc Albrighton – and added 10 goals for Arsenal, Everton and Southampton, placing him fourth for overall bench contributions.

9. Victor Anichebe
Anichebe and Divock Origi were close, each scoring half of their Premier League goals as substitutes. The former Everton, West Brom and Sunderland striker edged ahead with 13 bench goals, putting him joint‑eighth on the all‑time list, and he also supplied five assists from the bench. Roman Pavlyuchenko missed out despite 45 % of his 20 Premier League goals coming as a sub for Tottenham.

8. Daniel Sturridge
Danny Welbeck, the only current player in the top three with 19 substitute goals, still has time to climb higher. Welbeck shone as a sub for Manchester United and Arsenal and later for Brighton, where 12 of his goals arrived off the bench. Former England striker Daniel Sturridge, however, earned a place with a slightly higher share of his total Premier League tally – 22 % – coming as a substitute. Across his spells with Manchester City, Chelsea, Bolton, Liverpool and West Brom, he added one assist, giving him 24 total bench contributions, a rate surpassed only by Edin Džeko and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Richarlison matches Sturridge for minutes per contribution but falls short on total numbers.

7. Olivier Giroud
The World Cup and Champions League winner has never lifted the Premier League trophy, yet he has been a reliable late‑game scorer. Giroud ranks second on the all‑time substitute scoring chart, with 21 of his 90 top‑flight goals – almost a quarter – coming from the bench. Only Džeko, Solskjær and Javier Hernández have a better minutes‑per‑goal record as substitutes. Over ten Premier League seasons he made 103 bench appearances for Arsenal and Chelsea.

6. Tore André Flo
Flo combined size with surprising technical skill. He found the net in 34 % of his 38 Premier League goals as a substitute, the eighth‑best ratio for players with at least 20 goals, and he is also joint‑eighth overall for bench goals. His first came just three minutes after entering for Chelsea in 1997, and his most productive spell was with the Blues before a later move to Sunderland. Adding three substitute assists, he ranks fifth for minutes per goal involvement, averaging a contribution every 78 minutes when coming off the bench.

5. Javier Hernández
“The Little Pea” may be small, but he was a constant nuisance for tired defenders. Among players with ten or more substitute goals, only Sergio Agüero has a higher scoring rate, yet Hernández still ranks sixth overall. He recorded 19 goals in 78 bench appearances, a rate of 0.24 per game, and 36 % of his Premier League goals arrived after starting on the bench, mainly during his time at Manchester United.
